Oh my god, we melted the organist!

Last time I went to the annual Organ Gala at the Royal Albert Hall. I was in seat 1, row 1 of the Choir East. Along with seat 1, row 1, Choir West, these are the two seats nearest to the organ console. But the East side is the side which the organist enters from. ;) And we literally couldn’t have been any closer to the organ unless we were actually sitting inside it!

Our seats also gave us a rather good view of the Royal Philamonic Orchestra below us, and I could have actually touched the members of the Royal Philamonic Chorus who were literally in the next row of seats. The orchestra is always there, but this is the first time they’ve had a choir. They sang the Hallelujah Chorus, which was really pretty. They also sang one or two other parts which were very nice.

All quiet

Well, no class on Friday night. But being the last Saturday of the month, the charity ball was on at the church hall. So I took myself down there for my Saturday night. As I expected, I spent almost the entire evening in my seat. I didn’t even bother putting dance shoes on; they never left the inside of my bag. There wasn’t quite as many people there as usual; several tables at the back were actually empty. Still, there were enough people.

Shake & Bake

By the time I got home yesterday, I was roasted. I had a cold shower and tried to find something cool to wear. I also spiked my hair for extra ventilation. It then took a frustratingly long time to cook food, so I was slightly late arriving at my dance class (not to mention having only just finished eating).

There was a grand total of 5 plus me plus Laura. Pete and his girl were there, Elaine was there, and two other people who’s names I don’t know yet. Fortunately the hall wasn’t as hot as I was worried it would be. Even more fortunately, I brought a huge bottle of ice-water with me. ;) But by the time I went home, it wasn’t even particularly cold anymore.

Exam time!

OK, 20th June 2010, my very first dance exam! :D While I had intended to basically do every exam in sight, the 20th is also my grandad’s 80th birthday. And father’s day. So basically I more or less have to go down to London to see him. That means that due to scheduling issues, I can only actually enter for one of the exams I wanted to do. So I’m entered for my bronze-level Rock & Roll exam. (Which works out quite well, really. R&R is my favourit dance of all!)

Last weekend I bought myself some Rock & Roll shoes, which work extremely well. On Saturday I filled my car with petrol. I’ve got a new backpack to carry all my stuff in. (All my stuff? All I need to bring is a pair of shoes…) I am ready, baby!

A dull saturday

I had a particularly dissapointing Saturday.

I got my hair cut, with was surprisingly easy. Took hardly any time at all. I put more fuel in my car, and bought some stuff to eat. I also tried, repeatedly, to buy Komplete 6, and was completely unable to do so.

Moody Friday

Friday night was a bit disappointing. I turned up fairly early and managed to talk a little bit with Mike and Teresa. (Frankly Mike seemed more interested in watching the football on his phone.) Val arrived after a while and I talked to her a little. Then the Dutch couple came in and I walked over to talk to them for a minute. (Not that I could really hear any of these people over the music.)

At one point I looked up from my chair and realised that Lois had appeared over on the other side of the room. And she was on the phone, and she didn’t look particularly happy. She was quite friendly to me when I went over and said hi, but all evening she seemed to be in a bit of a mood. I don’t know what the problem was; presumably she had an argument with somebody or something. (She did say something about having eaten too soon for dancing.) She certainly didn’t seem to really be in the mood for dancing. She sulked and complained at everything, although she did smile from time to time.

Final preparations

Last night was my last Rock & Roll class before I take my exam on Sunday. It’s also the first chance I’ve had to test out my new Rock & Roll shoes. And also the backpack that my mum bought for me. I wasn’t particularly looking for a backpack, more just some kind of bag to carry all my dance gear around (not that there’s much to carry). But actually it’s quite a nice backpack (lots of cushioning), and it seems to work quite well for the intended purpose.

I wore my violent pink short-sleeved shirt, and did the spiky air in the vein hope that the extra air cooling might help. When I got there I realised that I was significantly more pink than some of the women. Oh well! At least I have cash this time. Anyway, we filed into the hall to find not many people present, and currently no Debbie.

I put my new shoes on, and had a slight amount of difficulty getting them comfortable. Not that they were uncomfortable, they just didn’t feel perfect. Anyway, after fiddling with them for a moment, I got up and walked around. They do feel a bit strange; the sole is in two independent halves, meaning that you can significantly flex your feet. It feels a bit odd at first. Presently Debbie arrived, and we began dancing. The shoes actually worked very, very well, and were extremely comfortable. (Although they do kind of melt your feet; they’re very warm!)

More people

Well, we had a few more dancers on Friday. Mike and Teresa are back, as are [the other two who’s names I can’t actually remember]. Teresa seems to be suffering with a bit of a chest infection, and indeed, Lois was chatting to her when I arrived. No sign of Paul & Pauline all night though.

Fortunately for me, the Dutch couple were there. I say “fortunately” because I arrived to discover I had no cash on me. Were it not for their generosity, I couldn’t have been able to get in the door! :o

I happened to still have the photos of my sister with me, so I showed them to Lois. No specific reason. And I also waved the flier for the new Rock & Roll class at her. It seems she’s no longer interested. She likes Jive better. (She’s changed her tune… not so long ago she seemed really up for it. Maybe the real problem is that Stephen can’t come with her, I don’t know.)
