The model

So, by executing a series of elaborate and dangerous acrobatics, I was able to read the tiny model number written on the back of our TV.

Samsung LE26A457C1D.

Any suggestions as to why it takes 25 million years to switch on or change signal source (or why it doesn’t turn on with the same source as when it was turned off) would be helpful.

Reflections

You know you’re old when Christmas starts to fill you with dread rather than joy. I guess when you’re a child, it’s not too difficult to give and receive presents. The world is filled with wonderment. There are so many possible gifts to send and receive. Toy cars and diggers with flashing lights. Electric trains and cars. Lego, Meccano and Contrux. Colourful pens, crayons and pencils. Toy musical instruments. Spiragraph. Etch-a-Sketch.

The bells of doom

Ah yes, the time of year has now arrived when shops and businesses start to openly flaunt Christmas. We’ve been hearing about it since before Haloween (!!), but now they’re getting serious. Read the rest of this entry »

Catapult

After the frustration of Friday, it was nice to get back to some fun dancing. Except that here again, we’re learning a new move that I can’t do. It’s called the catapult, and it’s nearly impossible to do it by yourself. I also don’t actually know how the steps go, so it’s difficult to practice. Suffice it to say it involves hanging onto your partner and swinging off each other — hence, catapult.

Still, it could be worse. At least we didn’t have to do a pit-pat…

Also, I bought myself a bottle of Lucasade Sport. 20 minutes spent trying to open the lid. I bruised my fingers and thunbs trying to force the lid to open, but to no avail. I tried biting it open with my teeth, and actually hurt my teeth! (I didn’t know you could do that.) Eventually I had to unscrew the whole cap, because I was so desperate for a drink. (Fortunately, we didn’t actually do much in the way of high-intensity dancing.) Oh well, at least the liquid inside was… delicious, actually.

(The ingredients list begins with water [reassuringly!] and “carbohydrate blend”, which is described as glucose syrup and maltodextrin — so, that would be sugar then? :-P No wonder it tastes so nice. It’s nearly pure sugar-water!)

You fail at dancing

On Friday night I again took my mum along to my dance class.

Unfortunately, I stood up to walk out the door, and my mum proceeded to spend another ten minutes getting herself ready — so I arrived rather late. Heck, in the commition I nearly left without my dance shoes! And then we couldn’t park anywhere near. And then of course mum had to walk at a snail’s pace to make me even later…

Suffice it to say it wasn’t a great evening of dancing. I arrived in time to join Les for a Cha-Cha-Cha, which was fun. After that, we spent ages working on the lockstop in the Quickstep, which I hate and Les can’t really do properly. After that, we want back to the Cha-Cha-Cha, but we added a new move that I can’t do. In summary, we spent almost the entire evening doing stuff I can’t do, which was very frustrating and not enjoyable at all.

Worst evening of dancing for a long time, really.

Still, Les and my mum had a good old natter to each other, so it wasn’t all bad…

Dance demo

Woo, dancing! :D

I like dancing. I don’t know if you knew that. It’s great fun.

My mum likes watching dancing. She’s an addict to Strictly Come Dancing, a show which is 3% dancing, 5% telephone voting, and 92% gossip, opinion and chatter.

Anyway, mum was looking kinda depressed last night, so I dragged her along to my Rock & Roll class. I think she liked it.

A real pain in the neck

On Wednesday, everything was groovy. But on Wednesday night, it was a bit cold in my bedroom. Suffice it to say, I turned over in my sleep and felt a sharp stinging sensation in my neck.

It wasn’t actually all that bad at the time, but by next morning I was crippled. Seemingly every form of locomotion of which the human body is capable uses this specific muscle, so any and every attempt to move brought gasps of burning pain.

A new personal best

Again it is time to dance.

I discovered in my class on Friday that the width of my dance shoes is still a problem. I even want back to the shop, but since I’ve worn the shoes now, they won’t take them back. (Not surprising, really.) Apparently the mystery material the souls are made from is something called “suede”. And, interestingly, the catelogue they gave me includes an entry for replacement suede souls — so it appears this part is perhaps replaceable. I’m wondering if all I need to do is put some wider souls on the shoes; they work pretty well other than that.
