I spent much of yesterday and a little of today drawing on PostIt notes with my ball-point pen. Trouble is, all you typically end up with is a nest of lines. Unlike a pencil, a pen only really draws in one shade of black.
Or does it? In fact, I seem to be able to get a small number of shades of grey out of mine. If I skim it across the paper lightly, it does make a faint grey line, and if I press harder I can full black. And then there’s various kinds of hatching to play with.

Well, last night I attended drawing class #1.
My classmates consist of 1 grey haired old man, 3 grey haired old women and 1 apparently normal girl. The tutor is a 30-something women. (Bearing in mind that my assessment of people’s ages is scientifically proven to be wildly inaccurate.) She’s quite friendly, but she’s one of these people who is easily distracted into rambling at length about subjects tangential to what she was saying in the first place.

Good morning. The temperature at my desk this morning is a very uncomfortable 14.4°C. I believe that’s an all-time record. (At least since I’ve had the thermometer…) And yes, it’s damn cold outside too.

I’ve just spent a week having a cold. That means basically I’ve been sat in my chair in my bedroom with a mountain of used tissues next to me, drinking gallons of water and playing Team Fortress 2 round the clock to try to take my mind off the pain.
Blogging doesn’t really fit into that picture anywhere. But today I’m back at work. Yay.
And best of all, even though my course was delayed by a week which should have given me plenty of time to go buy the correct supplies, since I’ve been ill for the entire week I still haven’t been able to do this. So tonight I’m once again heading over there improperly prepared. Oh good…

Last night, I played TF2 against some actual humans. (As opposed to playing against thin air; unfortunately it’s impossible to play against computer opponents. As the designer said, “you’d have to write 9 different bots!”)
Valve have done something very special with this game. It’s “easy” in that the game comes very naturally and you can quickly get up to speed. But it’s “hard” in that you’re most certainly not winning all the time. And yet it doesn’t get depressing like other games do sometimes. Sometimes when I play CSS, I think “what the hell am I playing this for? No matter what I do I’m just getting wiped out. This is hopeless!” But with TF2, sometimes you’re winning, sometimes you’re loosing, but you always seem to be having fun!
This game is special. I’m going to ask the NERV tribunal if we can set up a server of our own. (It’ll probably cost me money.) If we get our own server, or if I just end up regularly hanging out at a particular server, I’ll post the IP address here sometime…

Hahahaha! Well, what an evening I’ve had…
For some reason I had it in my head that the course starts at 8. On the letter I got yesterday it said something about “the tutor has ‘required’ to have the time changed to” and then some new times. I thought it was just being moved forward 30 minutes. So I got ready tonight thinking the course is meant to start at 8, but it might actually be started at 7:30.
No…
Half way through getting ready, just as I was getting dressed and just before eating my supper, I realised that the course is meant to start at 7 [which is the time now] and might actually be started at 6:30 [which was half an hour ago. And I’m naked!]
Needless to say, my supper was not a relaxing affair. Read the rest of this entry »

Last night, I finally got to play Team Fortress 2. Now I’ve never played (or heard of) the original, but this game kicks bottom. Literally. Just, wow.

OK, this is really very stupid…
Our garage door is knackered. You don’t need the key to open the door, just something to poke into the lock and turn it with. The lock mechanism is hopelessly broken. So anyway, I went out there last night and used my front door key just to turn the lock.
This morning, I got a nasty surprise. My front door key is now twisted!
I stepped outside, shut the front door, and then discovered I couldn’t actually lock the door! Indeed, I am now potentially locked out of the building, and mum won’t be home for another day or two!!
Fortunately, using a rusty old vice, I have now been able to squish the key into almost its original configuration, and it now seems to work just fine. But damn that was scary!
