Today’s disaster

Oh goodie.

It turns out that none of the computers on our network can find a domain controller. Everything worked perfectly yesterday, but today nobody can find a domain controller. (Oddly enough, the email server doesn’t have that problem. Maybe it’s to do with the backup DC they have at HQ…)

Friday morning

It’s a moderately cold, slightly overcast Friday morning. Today is the last working day of the week, and the last day of August.

I’m wearing my fuschia shirt. It matches the top our receptionist is wearing, and the one our accountant had on yesterday. (But then, they’re both girls.) Ho hum.

Cute QA Girl is back today, looking rather groggy and wearing that brown hoodie again. Bless… I just wanna go up to her and give her a big hug! (I’d probably better not though…)

Oh, and something weird is happening with our LAN, so I’m going to go fail fixing that now…

An award

…and the award for Most Improbable-Looking Power Supply Unit goes to Dell UK!

Most laptops come with a power supply unit with is essentially a cuboid. Typically the mains end is detachable and the laptop end isn’t. Dell however have decided to do something altogether more random. Read the rest of this entry »

Super server

OK, this has me drooling!

HP ProLiant ML150 G3 @ Insight UK

Yes, that is correct. £660 (including VAT) for a 1.6 GHz Quad-Core Xeon server (with 1 GB RAM). That’s impressive in itself, but wait! The server has a second CPU socket!!! :-o

But there’s more! Insight currently have a special offer on: buy this server and add a second Quad-Core Xeon for free!!! :-o :-o :-o

So, basically, for £660 plus shipping you get an 8-core Xeon server!

Seriously tempted…

The audit continues

When I left work last night, the auditors were still locked away in the meeting room with their huge piles of paper work, busily auditing away. When I arrived this morning at well before 9, they were still there, auditing. (Did they even go home??) It is now almost 4 o’clock in the afternoon. And they’re still auditing! They just live in that little meeting room and never come out… (Which, actually, is just fine with me! :-) )

The master of disaster

Last night, my mum told me a story.

My mum often goes to stay in this cottage in the middle of north Wales. Personally I hate the place, but she loves it there. Anyway, my mum knows the owner, Sue Ryan, moderately well.

Now, last time my mum was down there, Sue told her of a plan to leave her current partner and get back together with her ex-husband. (Are you worried yet?) Read the rest of this entry »

Taking classes?

I’m toying with the idea of signing up for a couple of classes. Specifically, these ones:

(D/H)ell

I have a saying. “It needn’t be hell — just don’t buy it from Dell®!” There now follows a short essay on why…

I was asked to select and purchase a new laptop for work. After much deliberation, I selected a Compaq ( = HP) nx7300. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, a fair bit of RAM, a HD that’s far larger than we need, and it was about £500 or something.
