I arrive home somewhat late. It’s dark, and the temperature is a few degrees above freezing. I walk down our driveway. Mum’s car is there. The front door is wide open, and a pile of shopping bags are sitting on the doorstep. Inside, the house is in total darkness. There are no sounds of life. I call out, but nobody answers me. I look back at the shopping on the doorstep. In one of the bags is two portions of chips, still hot. A quick check confirms that my mum’s car still has a warm engine. (Remember, it’s cold outside.)

Bent key

OK, this is really very stupid…

Our garage door is knackered. You don’t need the key to open the door, just something to poke into the lock and turn it with. The lock mechanism is hopelessly broken. So anyway, I went out there last night and used my front door key just to turn the lock.

This morning, I got a nasty surprise. My front door key is now twisted! I stepped outside, shut the front door, and then discovered I couldn’t actually lock the door! Indeed, I am now potentially locked out of the building, and mum won’t be home for another day or two!!

Fortunately, using a rusty old vice, I have now been able to squish the key into almost its original configuration, and it now seems to work just fine. But damn that was scary!
