Attention

I can’t remember when the last time I posted something about my jobsearch was. That’s mainly because… there’s nothing to report. I can’t find any jobs to apply to, anywhere. I refocused my search from Programmer to System Administrator, and still I can’t find anything. It’s worrying. Occasionally some over-enthusiastic recruiter will call me and send me job details. They say they’re passing my CV on. And I never hear from them ever again.

But what’s this? Apparently I’m having a telephone interview today. :o This will be… let me see… my forth job interview ever in my life so far.

Man, it’s going to be such an anticlimax when they don’t give me the job. :(

Epic fail

And so ends the real first day of my desultory effort at performing a job search.

My Grand Plan was to have a week off work so I could finally got on with making some real effort to get a better job. Monday was a nice diversion. Tuesday my mum happened — not much you can do about that — but now half the week is gone, and I’ve still done precisely nothing so far!

Today I decided to get on with the task. The problem, however, is that essentially I have no clue how to look for jobs. I mean, I’ve done all the obvious things and nothing has produced any results at all. I’m not sure what to do next.

Her Majesty’s Government

Two things. Firstly, just lately I’ve suddenly started receiving a lot of spam email. Secondly… Woah, hold the phone! I just got sent an email extolling the virtues of working for Her Majesty’s Government Communication Center (HMGCC).

They’re talking about undergoing security checks and “being cleared to a very high level”. Jesus, these guys are serious! :o

The news

I just got a call back from the agency regarding my interview last week.

Unsurprisingly, the company won’t be taking me up. Apparently they were very impressed with my technical skills, and they specifically asked the agency to remind me that I’m underselling myself. (Is this behaviour normal?) However, the role they’re trying to fill demands strong customer-interaction skills, which I utterly lack, and I don’t want to be in a customer-facing position anyway. In short, it’s not really the right job for me.

Not quite as advertised

Well, I survived a 2 hour interview. Which is good. When we pulled up outside the building, I was beginning to get seriously nervous! By the time I walked in the front door, the first symptoms of panic were setting in. (You know, when you do that thing where you try to pretend that you’re all nonchalant and casual, even though your insides are about to explode?)

w00t! w00t! Today’s the day…

Wahahahahaha!

So I’ve rooted out that suit I’ve never worn, my mum has somehow convinced Ted to iron my shirt for me (why?), and I’ve even got to wear a tie. I wonder whether any of this will make any difference at all?

Also, the guys who are interviewing me now have some dodgy footage on their CCTV system showing me and my mum snooping around the deserted building in the middle of the night to check it out. Personally I find it interesting that a company who employs “a small team of 15 developers” only has 10 parking spaces reserved for their staff. Indeed, on inspection it looks like it will be difficult to find any parking within about 4 miles of the building.

(But hey, that’s OK, I can ju— gah! It’s raining! :-( Oh dear™…!)

Oh well, I’ve got all day, so — in other news — I’m going to attempt to purchase Komplete. ;-)

It’s on!

OK. I have the confirmation email. I’ve booked the day off work. I looked up the building on Google Earth. I am going to be at a job interview on Friday, baby! :-D

My first interview, yays!

The girl I phoned on Friday has finally come back to me. Assuming I can get the time off work, I’m going to a job interview on Friday. Yays!!

(Ignoring the minor detail that we have a visitor from the USA here this week, who is coming over specifically to meet me. Hmm…)
