Back to normal

It’s only been a week without dancing. It seems like a month, but it was in fact only one week. Perhaps it’s the long weekend that made it seem longer. I’ve been playing with NetBeans and Git and doing some heavy Java coding. It makes each hour seem like a long time. (Java being such a blunt language, in an hour you can write a lot of code which doesn’t do very much.)

Yesterday I finally got to do some dancing again. Initially it looked like there was hardly anyone there, but it soon filled up. I got to sit next to Helen — but that it did me much good. It was pretty quite cold, so we did two warm-ups. Karen and Michelle turned up half way through the opening Stroll and apparently had completely forgotten what they’re doing. And then we did the Baby Workout, and they seemed lost there too.

Tea dance

I asked Nicole to come to Heath & Reach with me. But she’s going to a hen party, so she couldn’t make it. I asked Helen to come with me, but she was busy too. So Lynn was my third choice, and we went out to go some ballroom & Latin, like she’s been wanting.

I went to pick her up and found that a black lacy curtain now adorns her back door. Which amused me. Complete with magnets holding it shut. Took me a while to work out how to get in. Lynn seemed to be in good spirits — until she asked whether I got the birthday card she sent. I hadn’t seen it. (It later turned out it was just buried under all the junkmail.)

Let’s jive

No Nicole last night; she’s apparently going to a hen party this weekend. So no change of hitting Heath & Reach either. Fortunately, Helen came out to play, so I had somebody good to dance with. Unfortunately we spent almost the whole class doing the Foxtrot. After that, we started learning the Jive. I can’t do the Jive. And it’s no good Steve saying “get rock & roll out of your head”; I’m competing at Bracknell in a few weeks’ time! :P

I did try to get Helen to come with my to Heath & Reach, but she’s unavailable too. As usual, after class she quickly vanished. Apparently she has to go bake a birthday cake or something. (I should have got her to do me one!) But it’s OK; it looks like I’m taking Lynn out to a tea dance tonight instead.

It’s my birthday

Well, OK, it was my birthday on Wednesday. And I spent it doing the things I love — shopping and dancing! ;)

My grandparents sent me money, so I bought myself a whole bunch of diabolo kit. (Two pairs of handsticks and three new diabolos.)

My new red and black bowling shirt turned up the day before, so I wore that to my dance class. Unfortunately, no Helen, which is a pity. Nicole liked it though. It’s polycotton, so it sticks to me when I’m wet. I was a little concerned what it arrived; it looks huge. It seems to fit me reasonably well though. Gordon actually asked me where I got it. ;) Oh, and apparently it was Donna’s birthday the day before mine!

The last dance

Well, I’m not too sure about the new steps in the Cha-Cha-Cha. But I am glad that the last dance I did in England was a Catherin Waltz with Helen.

Painful

OK, so we turned up for our session with Debbie on Tuesday. And our dance routine got even more complicated. Needless to say, we couldn’t do it before, and we certainly can’t now. And by “we” I obviously mean “me”. :( I also developed quite a sore shoulder from trying to lift Nicole around the place. And by the time I went home, I was quite wet. It was amusing that we both turned up wearing the same shade of pink though.

Party time

Well, Friday night Helen was there, but Nicole is still unwell. Helen seemed far more interested in Nicole than with me. (Mind you, we’ll all kinda worried about her birthday party on Saturday.) Helen wasn’t in last week, so the new moves in the Cha-Cha-Cha had her a little worried. Didn’t last long though. It turns out I’m doing that second turn in the wrong direction, which is nice to know. :( Helen got half way through taking her shoes off before Steve made us do yet another dance before we could leave.

Dancing with a twist

I booked a session with Debbie on Tuesday, but unfortunately Nicole wasn’t well enough to join me. I was totally up for it anyway, but Debbie seemed to think there was “no point” to it. So I went home again.

I got some very bad news Wednesday afternoon. I was so depressed, I wasn’t even sure whether to bother going to class at all. But in the end I decided to go. Nicole is still unwell, so I still have nobody to dance with. I ended up dancing with Leanne, which wasn’t too bad. We spent the class experimenting with replacing the backstep with heel rocks, swivels or “Elvis legs”. Needless to say, it’s easy to do on the spot, not so easy in the middle of a complex dance routine. Me and Leanne did quite well, considering. Linda of course is great at that sort of thing.

We danced to I Love To Boogie, which I still suck at. And we did Double Trouble, which everybody still sucks at. ;)

I went home very, very wet. Five minutes later, Lynn called me back, and I went back out and spent the evening in the pub with her, which was nice. I’m still feeling a little depressed, but at least the evening cheered me up a little.
