At last, a night of rock & roll

So, Saturday night I finally got to spend an evening dancing rock & roll. That’s the first time since we went to see Si Cranston, way back in January. It’s been a pretty empty year for dancing this year. :(

OK, so this should be the bit were I tell you about how awesome the night was. Well, it was awesome. Unfortunately I spent quite a lot of it sitting around feeling exhausted. I really need to start dancing more. If anything, it seems I’m even less fit than last year!

Not much

OK, so basically little of much interest happened at class last night. Helen is back. Lynda was there. And Aca. The actual dancing just consisted of more twisting. Debbie says she wants us to practise getting low and twisting, as well as being up and flicking. Well, whatever. Suffice it to say, most of us can’t do the little routine she’s put together yet. (Actually, Debbie herself seemed to spend half the class trying to remember how it goes. C’mon, write this stuff down!)

For no explained reason, at the end there was chocolate. Ferrero Rocher, to be exact. I don’t know why.

On the way out, Nicole informed me that we’re doing a competition at Guildford next month. I don’t know what it is or know anything about it yet. Nice to know, eh? :o (It’s almost like how I told Lynn last year…)

Roll on the weekend, that’s all I can say!

Little to report

I wasn’t sure whether to bother going to class on Friday, but I did. Helen is still not back, so I’m dancing with myself. We wasted half an hour on the damned Tango, and then we had a stumble through the Saunter Together. (The bit I already know, fortunately.) We even got to finish off with a Catherine Waltz. There was a couple who don’t know it, so Mavis danced with him, and I danced with her. The Whisk & Wing was a bit of a mess, but the rest actually went quite well, what with me forcefully dragging her around the floor. ;)

They announced there would be a practise on Saturday night, so I arranged to meet up with Nicole. (Beats the hell out of shed building!)

I knew there was an exam session coming up, and I wanted to do my next R&R exam. It turns out it’s this weekend. Oh well. That’s why there’s a practise session; exams all Saturday, and more exams all Sunday. So anyway, me and Nicole did our little dance. And I was useless, again. And very tired each time. There weren’t that many people there, but the few who were present seemed mildly impressed with our lifts. (Not counting that Hitch Kick where Nicole decided she just couldn’t be bothered any more. ;) )

Good times

I spent a lovely evening with Lynn on Thursday. Much better than listening to mum whine about the shed she’s still trying to build! We met up at the New Inn, and spent some time swapping stories. It seems Lynn has quit her dance classes because her partner was so inept. So now she only does line dancing. She’s enjoying her skiing though; apparently she skies like a demon now.

Perhaps most importantly, Lynn is so far the only person I’ve spoken to who seems excited that I’ve got a violin. (Well, no, Marcus was too.) At least somebody cares!

Not much doing

Well, what a difference a weekend makes… Hardly did anything at dance class on Wednesday. Debbie has cooked up a sequence that none of us can do, but other than that, pretty quiet.

Nicole was complaining of having tonsilitus. (She said she wasn’t feeling great on the way home, come to mention it.) But still she turned up to class. And looked surprisingly cheerful. Ah well!

We all got our certificates to say we can come to play at Blackpool. And now I have a date for that. Looks like Karen and Michelle aren’t intending to turn up though. Oh well, their loss…

The Settlers: A history

Way, waaaay back in 1993, a German company released a game called The Settlers for Commodore Amiga. I played the demo, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Put simply, the game involves building a thriving settlement. You don’t control the actual settlers (i.e., people) directly. Instead, you build stuff. Each type of building takes one or more inputs and transforms it into an output. For example, the goldsmith’s hut takes gold ore and coal as input, and produces refined gold as output.

IDTA Bracknell 2012

Man, what a weekend.

As planned, me and Nicole had a practise session with Hannah on Friday night. I actually went in and did a little Samba at the end of Steve’s class. And then we went upstairs to do our thing. I don’t know what the problem was, but all the lifts seemed to be going unusually badly. Nicole’s disco solos look good though.

Overdrive

Oh my god!

Last night, I danced for an hour in Debbie’s class. And then she took all the competition entrants upstairs and made us dance for another half hour. I am so tired!

Once again I ended up feeling sick. I think it must be the cheese. Note to self: Do not eat cheese right before an intense workout!

The dancing downstairs didn’t go too well. Upstairs we danced to slightly slower music, and that seemed to go a lot better. Given that the organisers always seem to play really slow music for the adults, hopefully I might be able to survive…
