New tricks

Tuesday night, me and Nicole had a special half-hour session with Debbie herself. We got to watch the pair before us practise their Quickstep, and then it was our turn. Nicole hasn’t been feeling well the last few days, but she was perfectly fine for this session. I had feared I might not survive the session, but actually we spent more time standing around discussing tactics than actually dancing. True to form, though, we did learn a few lifts.

Debbie was very keen for us to work our arms before hand. We started with the Bunny Hop. Clearly it’s a work in progress; I’m not sure I got either the timing or the posture right at all. Still, it worked, essentially. We also learned the Hitch Kick. I quickly discovered that trying to support Nicole’s weight with my hand hurt my wrist, but supporting her with my arm is fine. And apparently watches are to be avoided when trying to do lifts (Debbie even said sometimes it’s better not to go for short sleeves). Nicole does really great high kicks, so I reckon once we learn how to do this thing right, it’s going to look fantastic.

Heh, Debbie got us to do press-ups before that one! I can’t do press-ups. :( Still, she got me to do some mini press-ups, which I could manage. Nicole, on the other hand, said her stomach muscles couldn’t handle it after the operation she had last year. It’s unusual for Nicole to wimp out of something, so she must be serious.

All in all, I really enjoyed myself. Debbie wants us to smile more, but really I was smiling anyway; I was having such a laugh. We now have a routine of sorts. We’ve yet to actually do it even once through without me screwing it up somewhere, but we’ve got time. I think if we can actually do it right, it’s going to look fabulous.
