OK, so in Friday night we all went to see Si Cranston at Cogenhoe. When me and Nicole arrived, that made ten of us — so a goodly amount. Nicole seemed far more interested in chatting to everybody else than actually talking to me, sadly. As I had expected, the place was pretty crowded. The DJ didn’t play particularly good music, but we managed to get some dancing done. Of course, with an exam tomorrow, we really wanted to practise our routine. But it’s not very easy to practise big space-hogging moves like the Windmill when the floor is crowded. Nicole did a great job of smiling so hard it looked like she was about to bust our laughing.
And what of Si himself? Well, he appeared around 9:30, with a band consisting of a drummer, bassist, guitarist and two brass players. All of them were consummate performers, playing with casual ease. Si himself is a tall skinny guy with an impressive moustache. Looks like he might be Persian or similar. Whatever, the music sounded very refined and crisp. Most of it was actually a bit too slow to dance to though. The most lively tracks had a huge amount of rhythm and style, but still quite slow.
Si certainly has a personality though. And he’s one of those performers who’s not afraid to chat to the audience, and acknowledges that they’re there. The final number they played was Dynamo. Me and Nicole ended up right at the front of the stage. We got to see Si do some karate, and also do some pretty nifty swing dancing. He got as all singing along too. And then there was two encores after that. So all in all, not the most amazing night ever, and we didn’t actually do that much dancing, but I certainly had a good time.
Other notable events included me getting a glass of fizzy water when I paid for lemonade, me proving that I can in fact lift Nicole off the ground, and apparently it was Pam’s birthday the day before, so there was cake. (And chocolate clusters, for that matter.)
