Rocky road

Well, Saturday night saw me, Lynn and Lavinia at the ill-fated Roade event. Of course, due to the Roade club shutting down due to non-payment of rent, the event organisers had to rapidly find a new venue and try to communicate this to everybody. What they found was Ashton Rugby Club, about a mile down the road. Now I drove over there the other day, and it looked pretty damned small. But once you get inside, there’s actually quite a large dancefloor in there. (Certainly much larger than the one at the Roade club — although that’s not exactly hard!)

What there wasn’t much of is tables and chairs. But Lynn wanted me to put her jacket back in the car, and when I came back the girls had found some extra chairs and even a table for us to use. As we were walking into the club we saw Pam and Clive arrive, and the five of us parked ourselves round the back of the right speaker stack. (Better behind it than in front of it!) We were right by the back door, which was wide open. It was quite chilly outside, but regardless it got very hot inside as the night went on. I certainly think we picked a good spot.

Most of the faces I remembered from Roade seemed to still be there. I saw the guy in the drape jacket wandering around looking generally hassled. Apparently it’s been a bit of a nightmare week, what with suddenly needing to find a new venue. The Debonairs were there, as billed, and they were pretty good. (Pretty loud too though. I actually saw one dancer was wearing earplugs!) The dancefloor was quite crowded for most of the night, but not nearly as bad as Far Cotton. That was just crazy! I did worry about the double bass though. The band left it laying on the dancefloor just in front of the stage. I was sure somebody was going to stamp on it! Why they didn’t leave it actually on the stage I don’t know.

Lynn was wearing a pretty little navy blue shirt with white pokerdots. Apparently she likes pokerdots. Lavinia was wearing a white top with a series of black lines and swirls. Lynn seemed quite concerned that Lavinia needed to feel included, but she looked like she was having a perfectly good time to me. I danced with both of them. There wasn’t enough space for anything too fancy. I managed to chuck a few surprise moves at both of them, most of which got landed. Lynn didn’t seem to be dancing at her absolute zenith. Then again, it was fairly crowded. You’ve gotta keep your wits about you out there!

In all, the three of us went home with big smiles on our faces. Which is the objective, after all. It looks like me and Lynn will be seeing Pam & Clive at Wellingborough on Friday. (Provided I recover from my tooth extraction before then!)

As planned, we did spend a little time at Lavinia’s studio earlier in the day for some dance practise. (She apparently runs her own martial arts studio.) The dancing wasn’t actually great. Choosing the music is harder than you’d think. And the floor is designed for grip, not for dancing on. And we all got too hot. So it was a bit of a non-event. Still, we all enjoyed ourselves I think.
